Shanghai: Zoo and Hotel Chillax

Feeding goats

Alice's picture

Ah, tree climbing again. We needed a little nature respite from the relentless Chinese city scene.

This is where the red panda comes from - China!

The Chinese were feeding these hyenas junk food, much to our upset. It was painful to watch.
We played a lot of barefoot chase in the grass, which felt restorative.

We played with this girl and I spoke with her mom who spoke some limited English. She was a dynamic woman and a teacher, my first non-guide Chinese person I connected with. She was very curious about our travels and life back in the U.S.
Speaking of a much-needed break from China, we retreated to our hotel lounge in the afternoon, which was empty and filled with tea, fruit and cookies, not to mention couches, wifi, computers, ipads, etc. for us to use, all with a lovely view of the river. I feel relaxed just thinking about our chess playing sessions in peace, with my Griffy.

Ok, it wasn't all peace. There was sibling squabbling too over cardplay. Which, funny, doesn't seem to bother Ken.

Boom taking a bath, looking out on the river.

The glorious river view from our hotel bathtub.

Another view from our room.

Can you believe these hotel views? It was the only time the entire year of our travels that I didn't want to leave our hotel and explore. But then, China exploration was kicking our collective ass.                 June 18, 2011
