Xian, China: Old Stone Horsemen

Over 8000 (!) terracota soldiers and 500 horses (not to mention 130 chariots) were found as recently  as 1974, discovered by a farmer digging a water well. Now, the farmer lives the near-bourgeois life of collecting money at the site, to take a photo with you and give you his autograph. He is a hero to most Chinese.

This army was built by the First Emperor of China to be buried with him, to protect him in his afterlife. Click HERE to see the burial site.

You, too, could buy these and take them home with you.

The more delicate sculptures, in the on-site museum.
