Hue, Vietnam: The Emperor's Fortress

Moat

The Palace

Boom wailing on our hotel's drum. Next Christmas present, Nanny and Papa?

Our last, and most memorable for the kids, stop on our packed day in Hue -- The Emperor's Palace hidden inside a citadel. A huge moat and fortress walls surround not just the palace but an entire city encircling the "Purple Forbidden City." No one other than the royal family and eunuchs were allowed in the Forbidden City.

"Eunuchs? What are eunuchs Daddy?" Now, my four-year-old could tell you what a eunuch is, and he's be pretty anatomically correct. Ask him about the Hue Fortress, and he'll talk balls with you.

The main citadel entrance has a noonday gate where only the king can walk through it. Next to him, citadels have a door to walk through, then, soldiers have their own door, then commoners, then elephants have their own BIG door. We walked in via the elephants' doorway.
